This September Vilnius Gallery Weekend will open up many galleries across the city

2017-08-28

Contemporary art is back from holidays!

Gallery weekends have been happening across different cities in Europe and the World for decades now, usually taking place at the same time as first exhibition openings after summer, thus marking the beginning of the new season of arts in the city.

Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association, celebrating its 20th birthday this year, is happy to invite everyone to Vilnius Gallery Weekend for the second time already – the event will take place 7–10 September 2017 in Vilnius and Lentvaris.

The second edition of the event will connect 26 galleries and art spaces across Vilnius – they will invite visitors to join for exhibition openings, open studios, educational programme and other art events. One of the main aims of this event is not only to introduce broader public to contemporary art processes and to artists in the city, but to help to discover as many galleries and art spaces as possible.

Vilnius Gallery Weekend art routes will lead to some of already well known galleries such as “Vartai”, “Contemporary Art Centre” as well as some of the independent art spaces such as “Autarkia”, “SHCH/ŠC”, “Sodų 4”. The event will also invite everyone to participate in “Vilnius Art Walk” tours, organised with an aim to encourage the exchange of ideas and art processes within larger audiences, as well as to get those who only rarely visit art spaces involved in conversations with artists, critics and curators.

This year Vilnius Gallery Weekend will have a special out of the city offer to visit art events in rural Lentvaris, thus contextualising smaller cultural centres in contemporary art processes. An exhibition titled “Depot” will be opened on 9 September across two spaces in Lentvaris’ railway station building. This exceptional location will allow artists to present their most recent artworks, expanding historical context of the site, and to reflect on local narratives.

The Jonas Mekas Visual Arts Centre – “It’s the Frame Not the Painting” by Jay Gard

In the exhibition “It’s the Frame Not the Painting” Jay Gard presents the new series of his sculptural objects. The focus of the exhibition is not the Artwork itself but that which usually supports the Artwork – the Picture Frame. Originally coming from the wood shop, the picture frame separates a painting from the real world. Gard takes a small cut–out of a frame, enlarges it to the size of one up to five meters – and makes it live a life of its own. “It’s the Frame Not the Painting” transforms our understanding of these objects and their significance in the context of the production and promotion of art. Curator Giedrė Malūkaitė.

Project space “Sodų 4” – “Guotika” by Donatas Jankauskas (Duonis)

Project space “Sodų 4” presents the exhibition titled “Guotika” by Donatas Jankauskas (Duonis). The opening of this exhibition will take place in the evening of 8 September during Vilnius Gallery Weekend.

“The stone sculpture was found on 8 September 1923. This found object strongly reminds of a creature which lives in trees and feeds on the greens. Gothic style of the sculpture suggests it is an artwork from Late Gothic art.

Usually Lithuanian folk sculpture was created by educated folk artists in difficult feudal and capitalist times. Statues of various sizes and characters called “dievukai” we crafted from wood (in exceptional cases – from stone) by masters of folk art. Precious works of art were created using primitive tools – knives, axes, chisels.”

Art laboratory “SHCH/ŠC” – “Body Density” by Vida Sevrukienė

Painting as a discursive artistic practice is just one of the currents and intensities that can be reduced to neo-expressionist albums, which thrive between Vida Sevrukiene’s tomato seedlings, the suburban buses of the nineties and the unstable credit system of public finance apparatus of the reconstituted state, and the secret belief in the story of modernist painting and its transcendence. In absence of a stronger position in the local arts field Vida Sevrukiene found new directions of deteritorization of painting and of her own escape. In the absence of a familiar territory we are faced with a dense and amorphous as well as autonomous body of painting, connecting and shattering the signs of meaning, representation, textuality and other intensities directed towards it, denying them as well as the author and spectators themselves.

Contemporary art centre – “Mouth to Mouth” by “Slavs and Tatars”

Challenging conventional notions of heuristic hierarchy, Slavs and Tatars celebrate a corporal and affective approach to the transmission of knowledge in their first solo exhibition in the Baltic region. The title of the show alludes to the primary source of history, the oral passage of traditions through stories, prayers, whispers, jokes or rumours. Throughout the works of Slavs and Tatars, the method of resuscitation shifts from urgency and expediency into a means of union and trade. The exhibition in Vilnius focuses on Pickle Politics; a recent cycle of works that draws inspiration from the 19th century literary movement in Vilnius University circles – ‘Towarzystwo Szubrawcow’ or ‘The Society of Rascals’. This body of work brings together the regional histories of the Lithuanian-Polish Commonwealth period and local communities like Karaites; the anti-rabbinnical sect of Judaism today living in the territories of Lithuania, Poland and Crimea.

Gallery “Kairė-dešinė” – “By the Rivers of Babilon. Refugees and Deportees” by Sigita Maslauskaitė-Mažylienė

Painful experiences and challenges often inspire to start things all over again. Refugees, encountered in person, and disturbing images of Syria and North Africa disseminated by the media do not allow us to stay in a comfortable place – they encourage action. Thus, not only social initiatives, but also works of art with contemporary Madonnas and Noah’s archs emerge. Through experience and imagination, the eternal themes of European history can acquire a distinctive form, a visible appearance, and they can carry the message.

Artist day care centre “Autarkia” – “Attempting” to be conscious”

“Autarkia” invites for two performances. One of them happened in 2009, the other is created now. Nine years – it’s not ten, is that a siginficant period of time? What has changed?
In a video never shown before the artists band “Kionigsberg” performs punkish version of Lithuanian anthem, breaks the guitar, trows plastic bottles at the crowd. Huge audience is not really engaged in energetic show, but rather passively observes the situation unfolding.
Nine years later in the same location, a recent graduate from Vilnius Academy of Arts Antanas Lučiūnas presents his latest performance.
Exhibition includes drawings by self-taught artist under pseudonym “Vienturtis” (Onlyborn).

During Vilnius gallery weekend “Autarkia” will present the new space.

Art project space „Vitrina” – “About the Borsch and the Pancakes” by Arturas Valiauga

It‘s the very last work day of canteen at the Vilnius Applied Art Factory. Last Pancakes, last Borsch, last eater. Until 2002, the canteen was the artists’ meeting and eating place.

The canteen on it’s last day – it’s not nostalgic memories. It’s a place of changes in life and time. People change, they also change their locations, creating an IMAGE of a new lifestyle. Interior that doesn’t change and fails to adjust is doomed to die and give way for a different quality of existence.
