We intend to give an implication to the centenary of reinstating independence of Lithuania as the highest point in the development of the state. We will create a project proposal for the monument of the centenary of reinstating independence of Lithuania and we will take action.

The development of public space is lacking a clear and defined visual concept and strategy. The way public space is currently being shaped is inconsequent, non-transparent, non-professional and chaotic. The discussions on immortalisation of significant national events and persons have seen many contradictions and conflicts for the past few decades. The relationship between and the officials and the public (the tax payers) is predominated by miscommunication, as reasonable decisions are not being made, while the politicians suggest obviously profane ideas and concepts, making the use of some urgent issues. This project will propose a solution which will allow to take opinions and requests of all directly and indirectly involved participants into account. This will be carried out by creating a possibility for the wide public to join in the creative process by offering their own suggestions, thoughts, advice to the main participating artist.

The mechanism of constant social exchange has been chosen to assist in generating the idea of the Centenary Monument. Artist Danas Aleksa will inhabit the space of „Sodų 4“ for one week, isolating himself from the infrastructure of the everyday. Starting with the evening of the “Culture Night” event in Vilnius until 23 June everyone interested will have a chance to visit the artist for four hours daily, to chat with him and to get introduced to the ongoing project. The artist will be creating the proposal for the Centenary Monument as well as the Pantheon of the Nation taking into account the ideas, comments, requests from the public and considering ratings of the project in social networks. From 18 June onwards the public will be able to express their support by donating the materials, food, clothes, tools or money to the artist. Every supporter will have a possibility to make a selfie with an artist. The selfie will be published on the project website.

Danas Aleksa (b. 1971 in Vilnius, Lithuania) is a sculptor, installation and performance artist, member of Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association. Themes such as relations between individual and society, time and space, ritual and stereotype are important in his creative practice.

This exhibition is organised by Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association, with kind support from Lithuanian Council for Culture and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.
