DEPAS / DEPOT

2018-09-02

For the second time, Vilnius Gallery Weekend’s satellite exhibition “DEPAS / DEPOT” invites you to visit the XIXth
century locomotive repair department as well as a suite – formerly tsar’s appartment – on the 2nd floor of Lentvaris railway
station. On the 8th and 9th of September six artists will be presenting works that were created or adapted particularly for
these places.
According to the physiological terminology, retention of blood, that may be used only in case of an emergency, is called a
depot. Similarly, the locomotive depot, an industrial repair centre, becomes a place for contemporary art only once a year.
Here, like in a clotted reservoir of the city’s memories, are gathered narratives of its unstable identity.
The exhibition interrupts Lentvaris’s everyday and explores the stories of a local context – the rich
and idle life that was happening when the rails were set and, in contrast, today’s weary rumble. The place was once intended
to be a heaven on earth, yet overtime it became an in-between point, a transitional zone. The park has become wild, the
waterfalls have clogged – like an organism’s depots silently waiting for a new life.
Sound installations, scents, sculptural objects, utopian visuals – the artists have been trying to grasp the fears of the place
and to foresee its future. The town was introduced and, in time, got
accustomed to some exotic trees, cultures and customs, yet it has remained unacquainted and untamed to most of us.
