Vertikalaus sodo Scaffold atidarymas su rezidentu Justin T. Tate

2019-07-23

According to the artist, “The project uses a sustainable landscaping/gardening design methodology to create a hybridized space of art, architecture and ecology that will grow to colonize the surrounding grounds through natural seed dispersal which has an enhanced capacity through the architectural body. As such, the work sets an example for positive cultural colonization, whereby space is de-cultivated. Weeds are used in the work because of their usefulness, aesthetic, durability, and in spite of them being generally undesirable or despised.“

Opening of the Vertical Garden Scaffold with Justin T. Tate

This Thursday, 25 July 2019 at 5 pm the presentation of the first residency at the new artistic site at Vitebsko Str. 21 and 23 Vilnius will take place.

Throughout July the resident Justin Tyler Tate (Canada/U.S.) has been working around the site and testing possibilities of a residency at the new cultural site in Vilnius. The artist has been working in over 20 residencies around the World over the past ten years. His artistic practice is based on re/constructing objects from used materials, “recycling”, “upcycling”, involvement of communities and similar strategies. For this particular site he has offered to build the first test version of a vertical garden-allotment, which will be opened on the 25th of July.

There used to be gardens in this part of the city since Renaissance, they were known as the “Gardens of Heaven” (Rojaus sodai). Some fruit trees and other relicts of those gardens remained here since then. Various plants naturally started growing around in the area, so Justin Tyler Tate suggests to reconsider the concept of garden and allotment. In order to do that, he invites to move the unwanted up to our eye level and higher, and to discover some aesthetic value and usefulness in weeds. The artist expects that these weeds will be used for salad, cooking soup or making wine.

Justin Tyler Tate arrived in Vilnius after his residency at Nida Art Colony of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, invited by Vytautas Michelkevičius. He has previously taken part in several residencies, exhibitions and workshops in Lithuania. His creative practice combines architecture, sculpture, carpentry, botany, food preparation, electronics and new media. He is also one of the founders of Error Collective.
