On 5 April 2024, from 6 p.m., the opening of the exhibition “The Whale Vanishes ” by artist Tomas Daukša will take place in the project space of the cultural center SODAS 2123 (Vitebsko str. 23, Vilnius). The exhibition presents fountains of fantastic shapes, which are part of the artist’s ongoing project “Fountains of Joy”. The exhibition runs until 23 April.

In the vast expanses of the ancient ocean, a colossal whale carried the disk of the flat Earth. For eternity, it held this unimaginable burden above the waters. One day, it became clear that the Earth is round, and the whale vanished. Perhaps the newly found truth liberated it from this cosmic duty, and it dove to a realm beyond comprehension. All that remained were vague memories of the gigantic creature that once swam through the unfathomable waters.

Fountains of Joy is a project that reflects on the limitations of the gaze towards the other, something unrecognisable and alien (possibly dangerous, but perhaps promising eternal bliss). The project weaves pieces of myths, speculative pseudo-theories, scientific knowledge and superstitions into a viscous whole that leaves the viewer to find the most appropriate source of eternal joy.

Tomas Daukša (b. 1988) is a young generation artist, who graduated from the Vilnius Academy of Arts with a Doctor of Arts degree in 2019.
