On 9 September 2022, the exhibition <\/b>Weather in Me<\/i><\/b> by the Berlin-based Lithuanian artist Dovil\u0117 Aleksait\u0117 will open at gallery Atletika (Vitebsko g. 21, Vilnius). A performance will take place from 7 pm on the opening night. This exhibition is part of Vilnius Gallery Weekend programme.<\/b><\/p>\n
Dovil\u0117 Aleksait\u0117\u2019s exhibition focuses on emotions and weather, merging with each other through poetic artistic research. It reflects on how external conditions such as changing strength of the wind and elements of water can resonate in a person\u2019s inner world of feelings. Emotions in the exhibition are understood as uncontrollable and can be compared to natural events such as the strength of the wind, the sea or fog.<\/span><\/p>\n According to the artist, the works presented in the exhibition were inspired by her research on the scales of emotion and wind, and her desire to create a system in which objectivity and subjectivity would become one another. It is interesting to note that the Latin word <\/span>emotion<\/span><\/i> actually means <\/span>that which moves us<\/span><\/i> \u2013 similar thing could be said when talking about the weather conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Vil\u00e9m Flusser\u2019s explorations of natural phenomena and Timothy Morton\u2019s ideas on hyperobjects, climate warming, the atomic bomb and sound are also relevant to the project. Although they may seem quite distant, but they are in fact much closer than we can imagine. In one of the video installations this ominous, frightening proximity seems to interact with the forces of nature and is reflected through emotional states such as fear and anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n The project <\/span>Weather in Me<\/span><\/i> was started in 2019 during Aleksait\u0117\u2019s studies at the University of the Arts Berlin (UdK). There it has received a lot of interest and a very positive reception. Parts of the project were also exhibited at the Pompidou Centre in Paris (R\u00e9seaux-mondes, 2022), in the exhibition Underground on emotional health (LanaLive Festival, Italy, 2020), at Silent Green in Berlin (Strange Things, 2020), and in 2021 the Lithuanian Council for Culture supported the project development.<\/span><\/p>\n An extended and experimental installation of this project will be presented at Atletika gallery, including a performance, presented on the opening night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Dovil\u0117 Aleksait\u0117 is an artist, working with video, sound and performance. Her practice explores the questions of anthropocentric worldview and non-human consciousness, notions of emotions and nature. Her works were presented in group exhibitions at Centre Pompidou, the AdK Berlin, at HKW, Silent Green Berlin and New York German House among others. Aleksait\u0117 is a cofounder of an international artistic research and curation group OKTA Collective.
