At 6 PM on January 14th<\/sup>, 2023, an impressive musical performance \u201cA Nap\u201d will be presented at the Atletika Gallery, located at the cultural centre SODAS 2123, Vitebsko str. 21, Vilnius. This event will feature the electronic music artist Ellen King (ELLLL), Vilnius University Women\u2019s Choir VIRGO, and the contemporary visual artist Kristina In\u010di\u016brait\u0117.<\/p>\n

Kristina In\u010di\u016brait\u0117, the mastermind behind this project, presents a musical performance inspired by the subtleties of nature. The artist envelopes a part of the choir inside the green, cocoon-like hammocks. According to the artist, these dangling hammocks can be interpreted as one of the stages of a butterfly\u2019s cycle of life \u2013 the \u2018pupa\u2019 is suspended underneath twigs, the flying insect forming inside.<\/p>\n

Like in her previous projects, Kristina In\u010di\u016brait\u0117 has continued her collaboration with various musicians, highlighting their contributions and the active role of each choir member. These singers independently select songs for the programme. Juxtaposing the world of a developing butterfly with that of a growing child, the vocalists perform one after another individually selected lullabies in these green cocoons. These tender songs are either heard from within the cradle, or recollected from TV screens showing that a mediated reality also becomes a part of our individual and collective memory. The repertoire includes a lullaby selected and collectively performed by the choir, and the talented Irish composer and performer Ellen King (ELLLL) flows into the hypnotic ocean of melodies sung by the choir. Her experimental electronic music unites these lullabies in a way that brings conceptual richness and musicality to this performance.<\/p>\n

Ellen King (ELLLL) is an Irish multidisciplinary composer, producer and DJ based in Berlin, Germany. She has carved out a distinctive voice in both contemporary and club-music contexts, with compositions etched by abstract experimentalism, fragmented rhythms and bass-heavy club.<\/p>\n

From shimmering melodies and gliding breakbeats to icy, percussive drum tracks and cinematic ambience, Ellen has released several EPs showcasing the breadth of her talents as a producer. Labels include Paralaxe Editions (ES), Glacial Industrials (IE), and First Second Label (IE).<\/p>\n

In addition to her work in club music, Ellen has worked extensively as a multidisciplinary artist with commissions and collaborations in the realms of visual arts, film, installation, dance and performance. Recent works include sound design and score for theatre production \u201cDas Ereignis\u201d, Deutsches SchauSpielHaus Hamburg and music composition \u201cImages & Sensations\u201d, commissioned for Ireland\u2019s leading new music ensemble, Crash Ensemble.<\/p>\n

VIRGO is one of the most acknowledged women\u2019s choirs in Lithuania that was founded in 1980. The choir upholds the traditions of choral culture at its university, introduces students and listeners to the music of different epochs and styles, and promotes a broader understanding of culture through preparing a variety of musical projects, and participating in festivals and competitions in Lithuania and abroad.<\/p>\n

The choir has held its programme in more than 20 countries, including USA, Canada, Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico. VIRGO has performed in such famous concert halls as the Academia Santa Cecilia, the Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo (Rome, Italy), the Church of St. Magdalene (Paris, France), the Auditorium Stravinsky (Montreux, Switzerland), the Montserrat Monastery (Barcelona, Spain), Palau de la Musica (Valencia, Spain), the Olympic Centre (Tokyo, Japan), and the theatre Juiz de Fora (Brazil).<\/p>\n

Kristina In\u010di\u016brait\u0117 is an interdisciplinary artist and has lived in Ireland since 2020. She has created video installations, experimental films, photography, objects, and musical performances with other performers. In\u010di\u016brait\u0117 pays significant attention to the analysis of identity and its transformation\u00a0across different social spaces. Even though she critically analyses topics of current affairs, she conveys such themes in a subtle manner, avoiding straightforward and linear storytelling.\u00a0Instead, she tends to explore the fragile boundary between reality and fiction, and opens space for intimate experiences where the fluidity of time can be felt.<\/p>\n

Her works have been showcased in numerous venues, including the National Gallery of Art, the MO Museum and the Contemporary Art Centre in Vilnius, the MAXXI National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome, the National Art Museum of China in Beijing, the National Art Museum of Ukraine in Kyiv, KUMU Art Museum in Tallinn, the Oi Futuro Cultural Center in Rio de Janeiro, the Kalmar Museum of Art in Kalmar, and the\u00a0Hall of Art in Budapest.<\/p>\n
