Egle Jauncems continually explores questions surrounding painting as an organic, mutable, and active object. Her practice is particularly concerned with inconsistencies of line, the unpredictability of colour, and shifts in form and pattern. Through her study of traditional European art—especially painting from the Renaissance period—she developed a strong engagement with the technical aspects of painting and a growing interest in decoding the symbols embedded within painted décor, backgrounds, and textiles. Over time, pattern and patchwork have evolved into a distinct visual language within her work, one that she continues to expand and adapt in response to her current conceptual concerns.
Jauncems often begins her creative process through note-making, documenting overheard conversations, fragments of language, and images encountered in daily life. In recent years, she has incorporated remnants of household waste into this archive of collected material. These forms of packaging function not only as reflections on pollution and consumerist culture, but also as a means of narrating existence within fragmented postmodern life. Her recent work frequently involves the creation of patterns derived from the residues of consumption, engaging with themes of environmental precarity, transience, and the fragility of both human and material existence.
Egle Jauncems (b. 1984) currently works and lives in London. Before beginning her first BA degree in Sinology at Vilnius University, she was actively involved in the alternative music scene in Vilnius as a recording and performing artist. Jauncems spent almost 4 years exploring and living in the Far East and moved back to Europe to complete her second BA degree from Chelsea College of Arts in 2013. In 2017, Egle completed her MA degree in painting at the Royal College of Art.
