Jurkšaitytė Patricija

Jurkšaitýtė Patricija (17 February 1968, Vilnius) Lithuanian painter. In 1993 graduated from Vilnius Academy of Arts. Since 1992 participates in exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad (Holland, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Denmark). Member of the Young Artists’ Group “Geros badybės”.

Usually paints in the manner of the most famous classical masters using classical etching techniques, mostly in panoramic format, the main motifs are contemporary phenomena: myths of today in the Titanic series (1994), iconography of tourism in the Burning Proposal series (2005). Some of the works refer to the vulnerability of the artist’s place in society (Beauty Laboratory 2000-01). The series Landscapes and Interiors (2005) reproduces the most famous works by the most famous masters of painting without the human figures depicted in them. Other notable series include Hotel Rooms (2010), Dutch Stories (2010-13). The artist makes extensive use of classical art iconography, reworking it to create a surrealistic effect, and raises issues related to contemporary theories of art and philosophy: lack-emptiness, repetition-original, representation-continuity. The works are held by the MO Museum in Vilnius.

In artworks by Patricija Jurkšaitytė appropriations, quotations or principles of deconstruction gain the quality of visual commentary, quasi-theoretical reflection or the so-called meta-painting. The artist wants to and is capable to demonstrate the limits of the language and practice of painting, its meaning and meaninglessness.
