Jelena Škulis exhibition Chains of Freedom, Wires of Connection at Polaris de Corbas

2024-09-27

On 10th October 2024 at Polaris de Corbas space an exhibition by artist Jelena Škulis titled Chains of Freedom, Wires of Connection will be opened as part of the Season of Lithuania in France 2024. This exhibition follows Jelena’s residency at one of France’s oldest residency centres, Moly-Sabata, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in July. This is the first exhibition of Jelena Škulis in France.

Jelena Škulis is a Lithuanian artist and researcher whose work is based on the link between matter and community. In her work, the artist evokes political and social issues with poetry and through the prism of the individual perspective. She uses the manual labour of weaving different materials and develops a performative action based on everyday language.

Using a multitude of languages, from the most widespread such as English to the most confidential such as Zulu, Jelena Škulis highlights in her installation the multiple conversations between different cultures, the intangible connections between spaces, people, and the multiplicity as well as universality of symbols.

For her first solo exhibition in France, at the Polaris in Corbas, she is proposing an installation that allows a dialogue between existing works and her new pieces, which were created during a residency in July at Moly-Sabata (in Isère). Sensitive to the century-old history of the textile industry in the region, she immerses the audiences into the material made of intertwining, linking and weaving, as if to remind us that we are interwoven threads in the veil of the world.
