Panel discussion: The Baltic Way. On collaborations and specifics of Baltic Art Scene. The third meeting of initiators of Independent Initiatives Baltic in Tallinn

As part of Independent Initiatives Baltics program, Hoib Gallery (Tallinn, Estonia) invites to take part of the panel discussion focusing on the possibilities, specifics, strengths and weaknesses of the Baltic art scene. The panel will map collaboration potentials between Baltic (and Nordic) countries, discussing their independent art fields through local, regional, and global threads and histories. The event will take place 30 September at 6 pm at EKKM (Kursi 5, Tallinn, Estonia). The discussion panel is moderated by Vaida Stepanovaite.

Independent Initiatives Baltics is an emergent network, grounded in 2022, for independently run spaces in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. It attempts to establish a meeting point between the histories, presents, and the futures of the Baltic region, exploring the needs and possibilities to cooperate based on mutual ideas, social and material infrastructures.

Vaida Stepanovaite is a curator and writer, Editor-in-Chief, and doctoral researcher and teaching assistant at Goldsmiths, University of London. In her dissertation she engages in a practice-based research on the relations and tensions between the institutive, the radical, and the communal in the self-organised contemporary art field.

Lina Rukevičiūtė is a researcher of independent artists’ initiatives in the region and part of curatorial team of Atletika gallery in Vilnius, Lithuania, also board member of cultural centre SODAS 2123.

David Ashley Kerr is a curator, writer and trained photomedia artist whose work centres on staging relationships between body and landscape, voyeur and performer. He is the creator of Work Work Work Work Work Work – An experimental platform for text, image and artwork regarding the representation of labour in art. David is a Visiting Assistant Professor at University of Latvia, teaches at ISSP Skola, and since 2022, the director of LOW gallery, an independent art space in Rīga, Latvia

Merilin Talummaa is an independent curator and art producer from Tallinn. She is lecturer at the Estonian Academy of Arts department of Art History and Visual Culture. Talumaa is the curator of the program Roots to Routes.
Roots to Routes is an initiative gathering a community of artists, curators and cultural producers whose trajectories are connected to the Baltic states region. Acting as a nomadic agency, its goal is to support and make visible artistic practices beyond cultural and (geo)political borders. An important part of the collaboration is to create and develop possible joint projects, aiming to build sustainable networks and forms of cooperation between various communities.

Michael Laundry is an artist, curator and choreographer. Laundry is Curator at Mikey Laundry Art Garden (MLAG), Bergen.

This meeting is the third meeting of Independent Initiatives Baltics network in 2022, organized by Hoib gallery together with the Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association.
