Audrius Šimkūnas (aka Sala), “S & M”(Sensors and Measurements)

Attacked by inaudible sounds, standing against a wall thundering at the lowest frequencies. The fence that separates our limited senses disappears among the sensors in the agony of noise: only here and now electricity becomes sound, only here and now carefully measured suffering becomes digital pleasure. Information acting as a distortion of reality. The exhibition unlocked the composition. All the sounds used in the composition “Sado & Mazo”are extracted by converting the information received in real time by air pollution, radiation, electromagnetic radiation, vibration meters and detectors into an audible spectrum. Along with additional surrounding sounds, they are collected at “Sodas 2123” space. November-December, 2020.

Audrius Šimkūnas

Audrius Šimkūnas (aka Sala) has been working in the field of sound art for more than 15 years. He is interested in sound, recorded outside recording studio, or, in other words, field recordings. Audrius Šimkūnas is the founder of the free-form performance ensemble “Sala”, initiated in 1994. Noisy and provocative performances of the ensemble have been held at the biggest contemporary alternative music festivals: “Sumirimas”, “Didelis pasaulis!”, “Mėnuo Juodaragis”, “Tundra”, “Sūpynės”, etc. The band has released over fifteen official and unofficial music albums. In his solo work Audrius Šimkūnas is interested in quiet sounds, also sounds inaudible without special technical means. In addition to collecting sound from the environment, local sounds and the documentation of sound maps, the artist organizes sound walks, sound art workshops, and conversations about acoustic ecology. A special place in his practice is devoted to sounds, inaudible to human ears, but those heard using non-traditional technical means: underwater microphones, contact microphones, seismic sensors, electromagnetic field antennas. All this helps to reveal the inaudible world around us.
