Liudas Parulskis “1993.06.29”

2017-03-28

In this this exhibition artist Liudas Parulskis is trying to settle a score with a kiosk – an object of small scale architecture – for the third time. He used a motive of a kiosk for the first time when he created his piece “Opera” from series “Vilnius in the Evening Time”. Later he included work drawings of kiosks in his book titled “Baroque and Concrete”, inviting the reader to make a kiosk model by himself – thus to recreate it as an architects’ horror and a primer for trade. In “1993.06.29.” Parulskis is using the same scenario but he is taking it one step forward by reconstructing and transforming his personal experience. He takes the viewer back into one particular day in history on which temporary currency talonas was still circulating in Lithuania and the new currency litas had also appeared. The artist presents a short dialogue between the kiosk workers that reminds of the time when ideas of the Reform Movement of Lithuania and freedom could still be felt in the air. The everyday of the survivors of the post-Soviet era was defined by the music of such bands as “Rondo” and “Metallica”, also by terrible hairstyles then called “sporto rūmai” (sports palace in Vilnius), leather jackets, t-shirts with Jordan, also the ongoing racket and continuous trips of the newly emerged businessmen to Turkey and Poland. It wasn’t the golden age of visual aesthetics for sure then, however, it is nice to return to it in order to understand where one is coming from.

Liudas Parulskis is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Vilnius. Parulskis graduated from Vilnius Academy of Arts in 1995 where he studied architecture. He has been exhibiting in Lithuania and abroad since 1998. In 2016 Parulskis published his photo manipulation book “Baroque and Concrete”. He recreates his daily environments and renders his own architectural visions of the city. Photo manipulation is quite common in Parulskis’ art practice. He is also known for creating comic books.
