“Cosmic Cave” by Alina Melnikova, LTMKS 2021 Prize winner

2021-12-27

To mark the end of the year 2021, the Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association (LIAA) presents two new artworks, created by annual LTMKS Prize winners. The first presented work is “Cosmic Cave” by Alina Melnikova.

“Cosmic Cave” is a ceramic and methacrylate installation that explores the dynamics between the urban and the rural, the cruel and the gentle, the strange and the familiar. It is the view of a magic realist on the diversity of our world and its symbiotic, mirrored, interlocking systems. It is a suggestion to think about “post-pleasures” in a futuristic situation where human structures are defined by a new biological and psychological state, the substance of which is still too early to define and too difficult to determine.

Alina Melnikova (b. 1983) is an artist currently based in Barcelona (Spain). She graduated from the Vilnius Academy of Arts with an MA in painting in 2008. In 2004, while still studying, she got actively involved in the Lithuanian art scene and held solo exhibitions in Lithuania, Austria, Spain, and took part in group exhibitions in Lithuania, Spain, Finland, Poland, Estonia and Austria. She is the winner of the 3rd place of the Young Painter Prize competition (2009), and a recipient of the scholarship of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania and the Sleipnir scholarship of the Nordic Council of Ministers.

In 2021, for the second year in a row, LIAA organised a competition for the production of new work for LIAA members, the winners of which this year were Alina Melnikova and Milda Laužikaitė. The LIAA Prize is an important contribution to members’ creative practices, helping them to realise their ongoing projects, exhibitions, works in progress, or encouraging the initiative of new works and exhibitions. The winners of the LIAA Prize were selected by the Council of the association.

Organised by the Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association. Activities of LIAA are financed by the Lithuanian Council for Culture and Vilnius City Municipality. Information partner – 15min.
