We’re happy to share the results of this year’s LIAA Award winner, Morta Jonynaitė!
The award contributed to the creation of new works -“Bolero”, “D5”, “Letter on the Snow”, “Plowing”, “Inherited Time” as well as the completion of works already in progress. These and other pieces are featured in Jonynaitė’s solo exhibition “Messages from the sky” which is open until October 4 at Panerių St. 38, Vilnius.
The artist writes about the exhibition:
“The exhibition is taking place at 38 Panerių St., Vilnius, in the former administrative building of the Lithuanian Railways-a space that metaphorically reflects one of the exhibition’s goals: to create a situation where participants, each with their own unique experiences, can come together for real and imagined conversations. When reflecting on the reasons behind miscommunications, I drew on personal experience, hearsay, and universal human intuitions, but I translated all of this into the language of my woven works, which are filled with symbols that are both new and universally recognizable.”
Morta Jonynaitė is an artist who lives and works in Lithuania. By exploring her surroundings through tactility, she attempts to capture various phenomena using traditional textile techniques. Hand weaving and net-making-archaic crafts with clear structures-are the tools Morta uses to weave narratives that capture the present. By presenting her work as installations, she constructs intimate spaces where relationships between different experiences and participants are forged.
The LIAA prize of one thousand euros to the artist contributes to the development of members’ creative practices, helps to implement projects under development, organize exhibitions, contributes to the creation of new works, participation in residencies, research, and the promotion of new initiatives, as well as providing additional dissemination opportunities through LIAA channels.
LIAA activities are financed by the Lithuanian Council for Culture.
