Dainius Liškevičius discusses artistic autonomy on the LIAA podcast

2026-09-21

The 2026 season of the LIAA podcast is dedicated to artistic autonomy and the conditions that allow art to remain free and critical. In the second episode of the season, cultural critic Monika Gimbutaitė speaks with artist Dainius Liškevičius, one of the initiators and long-standing members of LIAA.

The conversation takes Liškevičius’s 2000 performance Kliaksas / Restartas as its starting point. It returns to the circumstances in which the work was created, its relationship with national symbols and Lithuanian society at the time. More than two decades later, the work re-entered the public sphere in a different political and social context, becoming part of public debate and legal proceedings.

The history of the work offers a broader perspective on artistic autonomy. The conversation touches on creative freedom, the life of an artwork after it has been made, shifting interpretations, and the artist’s limited ability to control how their work is read. It also reflects on the wider relationship between art, politics, public space and institutions.

The conversation was recorded at Garso generatoriai studio.
LIAA activities are funded by the Lithuanian Council for Culture.
