Weather in Me – the Exhibition by Dovilė Aleksaitė at Atletika Gallery

On 9 September 2022, the exhibition Weather in Me by the Berlin-based Lithuanian artist Dovilė Aleksaitė will open at gallery Atletika (Vitebsko g. 21, Vilnius). A performance will take place from 7 pm on the opening night. This exhibition is part of Vilnius Gallery Weekend programme.

Dovilė Aleksaitė’s exhibition focuses on emotions and weather, merging with each other through poetic artistic research. It reflects on how external conditions such as changing strength of the wind and elements of water can resonate in a person’s inner world of feelings. Emotions in the exhibition are understood as uncontrollable and can be compared to natural events such as the strength of the wind, the sea or fog.

According to the artist, the works presented in the exhibition were inspired by her research on the scales of emotion and wind, and her desire to create a system in which objectivity and subjectivity would become one another. It is interesting to note that the Latin word emotion actually means that which moves us – similar thing could be said when talking about the weather conditions.

Vilém Flusser’s explorations of natural phenomena and Timothy Morton’s ideas on hyperobjects, climate warming, the atomic bomb and sound are also relevant to the project. Although they may seem quite distant, but they are in fact much closer than we can imagine. In one of the video installations this ominous, frightening proximity seems to interact with the forces of nature and is reflected through emotional states such as fear and anxiety.

The project Weather in Me was started in 2019 during Aleksaitė’s studies at the University of the Arts Berlin (UdK). There it has received a lot of interest and a very positive reception. Parts of the project were also exhibited at the Pompidou Centre in Paris (Réseaux-mondes, 2022), in the exhibition Underground on emotional health (LanaLive Festival, Italy, 2020), at Silent Green in Berlin (Strange Things, 2020), and in 2021 the Lithuanian Council for Culture supported the project development.

An extended and experimental installation of this project will be presented at Atletika gallery, including a performance, presented on the opening night.
