Event of LIAA residency program: Winogradsky Column workshop – Making the Invisible World of Microorganisms Visible

2022-08-25

We would like to invite you to have a glance at the invisible world of microorganisms, exploring the microbial ecologies, through the making of Winogradsky Column.

Winogradsky Column is a method of culturing diverse communities of microorganisms in a closed environment. It takes weeks and months for the different strata of micro-organisms in Winogradsky columns to appear. Therefore, we will just give a start for the future life forms to appear.

During the workshop we will create columns using water and soil combined with other materials, from a water source nearby SODAS 2123. As we get our hands wet and muddy, we will talk about the environments and eco-systems we are part of, in terms of scale, both physical and temporal. We will also consider different ways our columns might function: as environmental portraits, metabolising archives, durational sculptures, social planning for micro-organism communities, or perhaps bacterial architecting.

The event is a part of Kira O’Reilly residency at SODAS 2123.
This residency is supported by Nordic Council of Ministers and is organised by Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association.
Activities of Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Association are funded by Lithuanian Council for Culture and Vilnius municipality.

Kira O’Reilly is a Helsinki based artist; her practice, both wilfully interdisciplinary and entirely undisciplined, stems from a visual art background; it employs performance, biotechnical practices and writing with which to consider speculative reconfigurations around The Body. But she is no longer sure if she even does that anymore.

Since graduating from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff in 1998 she has been giving presentations and teaching, her work has been exhibited widely throughout the UK, Europe, Australia, China and Mexico. Her artistic practices variate between visual art and performance,  live art and science, art and technology interfaces.

Event will be in English.

Time of the event: 3rd of September, 13.00.

Venue: SODAS 2123 Alt Lab (Vitebsko str. 23, 2nd floor)

Activities of LIAA are supported by Lithuanian Council for Culture and Vilnius City Municipality.

Organised by: Institutio media in collaboration with Lithuanian Interdisciplinary Artists’ Union
