2024-10-02
On 12 October 2024, at 6 pm the exhibition ‘Legroom’ by the artist Ona Juciūtė will be opened at La Halle – Centre d’art contemporain in Pont-en-Royans as part of the Lithuanian Season in France 2024. It will show the results of the artist’s residency, which took place in September this year at La fabrique des luddites.
Ona Juciūtė is interested in the memorial charge in objects and the traces of gesture left in the material of artefacts. As a sculptor, she pays particular attention to the manual skills involved in the manufacturing process. Working with specialists of various crafts she learns to reproduce the gestures of craftsmen from earlier times, while transforming the final objects produced.
After working in the nearby remote residence of La fabrique des luddites for the whole month of September, this exhibition will present a new project specifically adapted for the contemporary art space La Halle, exploring the region’s historically shaped productive activities (textiles, coal mining, etc.). The experimental installation will be permeated by physical transformations affected by the infusion of fire and light into materials. The artist will present works that crystallise gesture and practice, but which do not claim to be symbolic or valuable. Juciutė’s works are neither “purist” nor “melancholic”, captured in the present moment they seem at the same time both temporary and outdated.

About La Halle
Established in 1986 in the heart of the Vercors Regional Nature Park, La Halle presents demanding, high-quality exhibitions in terms of the diversity of media, intellectual approaches and generations of artists, contributing to the vitality of the French art scene while opening up to international collaborations. The programme is always varied, with group exhibitions, solo shows and special projects alternating throughout the year in the exhibition rooms, the showcase and the adjoining auditorium.
Thanks to its unrivalled location, rich regional history and majestic surrounding landscapes, the art centre regularly invites different artists to produce exhibitions in situ or in close connection with its setting. In this way, it becomes a veritable laboratory for contextual artistic research, while at the same time opening the door to universal questions that fuel the current debate on ideas and nourish the collective imagination.
