What does it mean when energy harvesting and low voltage solutions are used in combination with autonomous computing machines? How can these solutions be used to raise awareness that we, humans, are not the only species on earth? These questions will be discussed in an artistic context, hacked and practiced in a workshop in Vilnius from 12 to 14 January 2024 under the direction of Mindaugas Gapševičius, Sara Reichert and Co.
The aim of the workshop is to reimagine our world as inhabited by both machines and non-machines. To help our imagination flourish, we will get our hands dirty and try to envision these possible futures. During the practical part of the workshop, participants will work on autonomous computing machines composed by simple electronic components, powered by solar cells. We will use communication support systems and protocols including GPS, GPRS, and WIFI. By the end of the workshop we expect to have developed simple technological solutions to be of use for artistic and experimental purposes.
The open call is directed to artists, writers, philosophers, designers, activists, engineers & changemakers. Please send a motivation letter and CV at o-o@o-o.lt. The deadline is the 10th of December 2023.
About TOC
TOC is an international project led by an interdisciplinary group of creative practitioners, academics, researchers, and arts organizations that specialize in creative technologies and have considerable experience in the production and dissemination of this kind of knowledge across Europe and internationally, who have come together to form a “critical network of care.” The network collaborates to share their collective expertise and technical knowledge employed in creative ways to develop knowledge and methodologies of care. The main aim is to produce a well formulated and integrated TOOLKIT OF CARE comprising articles, prototypes, audiovisual documentation, technical manuals, theoretical analysis, and data. It will act as a model of how to successfully share knowledge and expertise across different geographical regions and social groups.
The workshop is organized by the Institutio Media. It is part of the COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology)-funded project: Toolkit of Care (TOC), CA21102.
