Kitchenlab

2016-07-26

03-05 August 2016

For one week in the beginning of August “Sodų 4” space will turn into a laboratory space and a mini-residency space for a group of artists from Berlin, working together on the project titled “Kitchenlab”.

Curated by artist and curator Mindaugas Gapševičius, this project will introduce a series of experimental workshops, presented over three days, aimed at enhancing the use of equipment available in the home kitchen. The event will end with the presentation of results and a silent auction on Friday 5th August.

Kitchenlab is a project and a biochemical lab developed by TOP, a Berlin-based association for the Promotion of Cultural Practice. The aim of the project is two-fold: to design a modular set of tools which would turn a home kitchen into the biolab and to teach audiences to use a home kitchen for the new purpose. Kitchenlab unfolds through guest-hosted cooking sessions, workshops, and discussions in Berlin (>top Schillerpalais), Stockholm (Supermarket Art Fair), Vilnius (Sodų 4), Copenhagen (Alt_Cph) and Helsinki (Pixelache). The lab arrangement of the kitchen provides the atmosphere for discourses around the world and society including cultural heritage and scientific knowledge, fermentation and distillation, humans and other live beings. It explores possibilities of the societal shift towards the understanding and consciousness of human species as a balanced part of the ecosystem we live by and within. Kitchenlab aims to gather those interested in working between the studio, the kitchen and the laboratory, because food culture, experimental lab culture and artistic or creative practice overlap.

At “Sodų 4” the audience will be invited to join kitchen lab experiences through the series of workshops and to share their knowledge which will feed back into the course of the nomadic kitchen-biolab and/or organisation of the future modular set of tools. Part of the nomadic kitchen-biolab will be a variety of art works contributed by participating and guest artists.
